A Reddit post has recently gone viral for sharing the story of a man who built a fortune of ₹4.7 crore and retired at 45 – with no flashy job or any side hustle.

Viral Reddit Post on How Man Retires at 45 with ₹4.7 Crore With No Fancy Job or Business
The post was shared by Reddit user @u/CAGRGuy. He explained how his uncle managed to achieve this goal by living simply and investing regularly in mutual funds.
His uncle never had a flashy job, never built a business, never traded stocks. Just a boring job that paid decently.
He lived in the same 2BHK flat for 30 years, used a scooter for travel, and rarely went on holidays. He didn’t run a business, didn’t trade stocks, and didn’t do anything flashy with his money.
In 1998, he started by investing ₹10,000 in a mutual fund. Later, he began a ₹500 SIP (Systematic Investment Plan). As his salary increased, he raised the amount – first to ₹1,000, then ₹2,000, and later ₹5,000.
“When he retired at 45, I asked him how he pulled it off. He handed me his passbook and a sheet he printed from CAMS. The total corpus: ₹4.7 crore,” the Redditor shared.
The post received nearly 9,200 upvotes and went viral, with many users commenting on it. Some admired the discipline. Others questioned if it was really worth it.
Here’s how people reacted to the post:
@AlphaSeeker_07 commented, “I appreciate him saving money at an early stage, but not at the cost of compromising every stage of life. But good that he is free now and will be free rest of his life.”
@aparigrahi commented, “Living a simple life isn’t a compromise for everyone. Some people prefer peace over show off. Such people have much less carbon footprint than others”
@ArtV16 commented, “Should you postpone all your travel and fun until you retire? We need to save, but live in the now as well. We don’t have any guarantee if you will live till 45.”
@play3xxx1 commented, “Guy is living my dream life . Never wanted flashy cars or house . Just wanted peaceful life.”
@JDdiah commented, “Wouldn’t it be better to have 3.7C, but they took a vacation every 6 months and owned a decent car? I’m all in for saving, but not at the cost of basic comfort and happiness.”
@Sreevani15 commented,“Math is not mathing because OP didn’t give much time to write the script. 55 yrs would have been more believable.”
@MahabaliTarak commented, “Saving early is a lazy strategy with frugal living in the prime years only to dream of a happy old age.”
@No-Journalist1283 commented, “We aren’t living to save money. We are living to enjoy life at fullest. Your uncle might have saved millions but has he ever used them for himself to live a life?? If no, they are of same value as what average man earns and saves. If the answer is that is for his next generation, then still my point stands.”
@Rushgig commented, “But what is the point of all the savings if one has to live so frugally. Life is to be enjoyed, money can’t be transferred to the next life.”
While some people praised the uncle’s smart financial planning and simple lifestyle, others felt that he may have missed out on living fully.
